Mark Bray: Anarchist Education and the Modern School: A Francisco Ferrer Reader

Yankee Bookshop welcomes back Dartmouth Lecturer Mark Bray, author of Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook, to discuss his forthcoming book: Anarchist Education and the Modern School: A Francisco Ferrer Reader (pub. date 12.15.2018).
About the book: On October 13, 1909, Francisco Ferrer, the notorious Catalan anarchist educator and founder of the Modern School, was executed by firing squad. The Spanish government accused him of masterminding the Tragic Week rebellion, while the transnational movement that emerged in his defense argued that he was simply the founder of the groundbreaking Modern School of Barcelona. Was Ferrer a ferocious revolutionary, an ardently nonviolent pedagogue, or something else entirely?
Anarchist Education and the Modern School is the first historical reader to gather together Ferrer’s writings on rationalist education, revolutionary violence, and the general strike (most translated into English for the first time) and put them into conversation with the letters, speeches, and articles of his comrades, collaborators, and critics to show that the truth about the founder of the Modern School was far more complex than most of his friends or enemies realized. Francisco Ferrer navigated a tempestuous world of anarchist assassins, radical republican conspirators, anticlerical rioters, and freethinking educators to establish the legendary Escuela Moderna and the Modern School movement that his martyrdom propelled around the globe.
About the Contributors:
Francisco Ferrer Guardia (1859–1909) was a Catalan anarchist. Following the declaration of martial law in 1909 during the Tragic Week, Ferrer was arrested and then executed at Montjuich Castle. He was the founder of la Escuela Moderna (the Modern School), an antiauthoritarian primary and secondary school. After Ferrer's execution, la Escuela Moderna attracted international attention, inspiring such figures as Emma Goldman, Upton Sinclair, Jack London, Edward Carpenter, Maxim Gorky, and Albert Camus.
Mark Bray is a historian of Modern European History, a political organizer, and the author of Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook and Translating Anarchy: The Anarchism of Occupy Wall Street. He is currently a Lecturer at Dartmouth College.
This event is free and open to all.

Archer Mayor: Bury the Lead

Archer Mayor is coming to Woodstock to discuss his newest Joe Gunther novel: Bury the Lead.
About the Book: In Mayor’s latest crime novel, a woman is found dead at the top of a Vermont ski area in the summer. The investigation leads to Mick Durocher, who, when confronted, confesses to the killing. Case closed? Hardly. The confession is riddled with holes, the evidence doesn’t back it up, and Joe Gunther and his crew are left to wonder why their initially hot lead is dead and the murder now clearly the work of some unseen master manipulator.
About the Author: Archer Mayor has written 29 bestselling Joe Gunther novels based on his actual experience in the field. Over the past 30 years, he has worked (or continues to work) as a firefighter/EMT, a police officer, and a death investigator for Vermont’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Mayor’s diverse careers in other fields also inform his books. He has been a scholar, editor, researcher, and photographer, as well as a political advance man and a medical illustrator. He is a graduate of Yale. In 2016, the author received the Robert B. Parker Award, named for “the dean of mystery writers.” He is also a received the Vermont Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. The New York Times calls Archer Mayor “The boss man on procedures.”
This event is free and open to all.

Literary North Writers' Process Night
with Camille Guthrie & Peter Orner
music by Laura Jean Binkley
Saturday, November 3rd, 2018 - Open Door Workshop, WRJ
We are truly excited to be helping out with this upcoming event from the literary north team! Here's what they have to say about their Writers' Process Night workshop:
Join us for a behind-the-scenes peek at the writer’s process —from inspiration and early drafts, through revision, to final publication. Poet Camille Guthrie and fiction/non-fiction writer Peter Orner will read from their work and discuss their writing processes and influences, tracing the evolution from idea to finished product. While this event may be of special interest to budding writers, we’ve planned this event for anyone curious about the creative process. There will be time for conversation, so please come prepared with questions.
We’ll be back in the beautiful Open Door Workshop in White River Junction, where we held our very first event, The Mud Season Salon. The evening will open with live music by Laura Jean Binkley. After our in-depth discussion with Camille and Peter, we welcome you to join us at the “biscuit bar” (yes, you read that right!) with all of the fixings.
Books will be available for purchase courtesy of The Yankee Bookshop in Woodstock, Vermont. Local checks or cash only, so please plan accordingly!
Tickets are $5 and space is limited, so get your tickets early!

About Lindsey Stoddard: Lindsay grew up loving books. Born and raised in Vermont, she spent lots of time outside, hiking and skiing and playing in the woods with her big brother - but from a young age she knew she wanted to be a teacher and a writer. After college Lindsey moved to New York City, where she taught middle school English for ten amazing years. She now lives back in Vermont. Just Like Jackie is her debut. You can read more about Lindsey and her work on her website.
About Just Like Jackie: For as long as Robinson Hart can remember, it’s just been her and Grandpa. He taught her about cars, baseball, and everything else worth knowing. But Grandpa’s memory has been getting bad—so bad that he sometimes can’t even remember Robbie’s name. She’s sure that she’s making things worse by getting in trouble at school, but she can’t resist using her fists when bullies like Alex Carter make fun of her for not having a mom. Now she’s stuck in group guidance—and to make things even worse, Alex Carter is there too. There’s no way Robbie’s going to open up about her life to some therapy group, especially not with Alex in the room. Besides, if she told anyone how forgetful Grandpa’s been getting lately, they’d take her away from him. He’s the only family she has—and it’s up to her to keep them together, no matter what. |
About Daphne Kalmar: Daphne Kalmar was an elementary and middle-school teacher for over twenty years. Exploring the natural world with kids was her passion as an educator—she owned seventy-five pairs of rubber boots so she could outfit each new class in September and lead weekly expeditions to local creeks and ponds. She has an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts. A Stitch in Time is her debut. You can read more about Daphne and her work on her website.
About A Stitch in Time: Donut is an eleven-year old geography buff who keeps her taxidermied mice hidden in her late mother’s hope chest. Her pops recently passed away, leaving her an orphan, and Aunt Agnes has moved in, bringing along her lumpy oatmeal, knitting, and a plan to drag Donut off to Boston forever. Donut stands to lose everything: her friends, her village, her home, the woods, and walks where the memories of her pops are stored up. While Donut dodges the ache of missing her pops, she and her best friend Tiny plan how to keep her where she belongs. A Stitch in Time is shot through with gorgeous, evocative language, and gets right to Donut’s heart. |

Thea Lewis: Wicked Vermont, 6/7/2018
Vermont is a picturesque landscape, but the idyllic setting hides a sometimes dark and desperate past. H.H. Holmes, America's first serial killer, may have been the University of Vermont's deadliest student. A Burlington resident made an empire partly by carrying contraband goods to and from Canada. The first United States president subject to a birther movement wasn't 44, but a much lower number. A Burlington schoolboy ran away with the circus and became an international sensation under the big top. Author Thea Lewis takes a revealing ride through the unique and colorful history of the Green Mountain State.
|
Thea Lewis is a Vermont native with a writing career that has spanned more than three decades. She’s crafted scripts for radio and television, and since 2009 has put her love of research and history to work writing books for The History Press’ Haunted America series. In addition to her latest offering, Wicked Vermont (2018, History Press/Arcadia), her titles include Haunted Burlington, Spirits of Vermont’s Queen City, Ghosts and Legends of Lake Champlain and Haunted Inns and Ghostly Getaways of Vermont. Thea is also the creator of Queen City Ghostwalk, the Burlington, Vermont walking tour chosen ‘Best Scary Stroll’ by Yankee Magazine. Praise from Paula McLain (author of The Paris Wife and Circling the Sun): "Nothing is more audacious or more inspiring than the human spirit, as we see in Stephen Kiernan's luminous new novel, The Baker's Secret. With painterly precision and great heart, Kiernan gives us an intimate view of a small French village forced to endure the soul-stifling humiliations of German occupation, and Emma, the young baker and consummate survivor whose boldness and ingenuity help keep her village alive as they pray the Allies will make good on their promise of rescue. Emma is an unforgettable heroine, and Kiernan's novel will have you weeping, and then cheering. A tale beautifully, wisely, and masterfully told."
About the Author: Stephen P. Kiernan is a graduate of Middlebury College, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. He spent more than twenty years as a journalist, winning numerous awards for excellence in the field, before turning to fiction writing. The Baker's Secret is his third novel.

Past Event: Yvonne Daley: Going Up the Country 4/11/2018

Pentangle Arts will be bringing the Summer of Love to the forefront of our local minds with their upcoming production of Hair: A Tribal Rock Musical - so we wanted to take a look at how the counterculture movement changed Vermont specifically. Yvonne Daley will be joining us in the shop to discuss her upcoming book: Going Up the Country, which focuses on exactly that time period in our state's history. Yvonne will lead a discussion on Vermont in the 1960s, to bring us all up to date on what was happening here during that tumultuous time in our country's past.
Going Up the Country is part oral history, part nostalgia-tinged narrative, and part clear-eyed analysis of the multifaceted phenomena collectively referred to as the counterculture movement in Vermont. This is the story of how young migrants, largely from the cities and suburbs of New York and Massachusetts, turned their backs on the establishment of the 1950s and moved to the backwoods of rural Vermont, spawning a revolution in lifestyle, politics, sexuality, and business practices that would have a profound impact on both the state and the nation. The movement brought hippies, back-to-the-landers, political radicals, sexual libertines, and utopians to a previously conservative state and led us to today’s farm to table way of life, environmental consciousness, and progressive politics as championed by Bernie Sanders.
About the Author: Yvonne Daley is the author of five previous books and director of the Green Mountain Writers Conference. This upcoming book, Going Up the Country, will be available in June of this year.

Past Event: World Class with Peggy Shinn 3/8/18

Fresh from covering the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang South Korea, Peggy Shinn is hitting the road to promote her new book, World Class: The Making of the U.S. Women's Cross-Country Ski Team. We're beyond excited to have her visit us here in Woodstock as a part of that tour!
About the book: What makes a great team?
Sports journalist Peggy Shinn answers this question in her enthralling account of the dramatic rise of the U.S. women’s cross-country ski team, winners of eight medals at three world championships over the past five years. Shinn’s story—based on dozens of interviews with athletes, coaches, parents, spouses, and friends—paints a vivid picture of the obstacles that America’s female athletes must overcome not just to ski with the world’s best, but to beat them. In a sport where U.S. women have toiled for decades, mostly in the middle or the back of the pack, the development of a world-class team attests to the heady combination of a transformational leader, a coach who connects with his athletes, the super-fast individual skiers who are also conscientious teammates—and a bit of good luck.
This is the story of Kikkan Randall, Liz Stephen, Holly Brooks, Jessie Diggins, Ida Sargent, Sadie Bjornsen, Sophie Caldwell, Rosie Brennan, and coach Matt Whitcomb—and how they created the perfect team.
About the Author: PEGGY SHINN is a senior contributor to the U.S. Olympic Committee’s website, TeamUSA.org, and a former contributing editor to Ski Racing magazine. She is the author of Deluge: Tropical Storm Irene, Vermont’s Flash Floods, and How One Small State Saved Itself

Past Event: The Full Vermonty with Bill Mares, 2/22/18

Bill Mares and a special guest will be joining us at the bookshop for an evening of sharing from his latest collection of essays by Vermont writers from across the state: The Full Vermonty - Vermont In the Age of Trump.
About the Book: Vermont towns may be small, but (unlike Trump’s hands) they are not clenched in anger. Rather, they are resisting with characteristic wit and rural asperity. In The Full Vermonty: Vermont in the Age of Trump, edited by Bill Mares and Jeff Danziger, some of Vermont’s most famous voices ask, “What the hell do we do now?” The collection of essays, published by Green Writers Press in Brattleboro, Vermont, explores how Vermont, a small, rural state with a progressive history, must reckon with what it means to exist in Trump’s America. But The Full Vermonty isn’t just for Vermont readers—it is for anyone wondering how to resist, persevere, and remain hopeful in the age of Trump.
Bernie Sanders, Vermont celebrity and consistent force for good in our troubled nation, loved this collection: "At a time when many people are trying to figure out how we ended up with Donald Trump as president, The Full Vermonty offers some comic relief from the painful reality of Trump’s policies. Bill Mares, Jeff Danziger and their band of writers and artists give a brilliant, and very Vermont-like, perspective on where we go from here. We most definitely need this kind of wit and humor in the age of Trump.”
About the Editor: Raised in Texas, educated at Harvard, Bill Mares has been a journalist, a high school teacher and a member of the Vermont House of Representatives. He has authored or co-authored 15 books on subjects ranging from the Marine Corps to workplace democracy to Presidential fishing, plus four books of humor with Prof. Frank Bryan, including the best-seller, Real Vermonters Don’t Milk Goats. His hobbies include running, beekeeping, singing and fly-fishing. He lives in Burlington, Vermont with his wife of 45 years, Chris Hadsel. They have two sons.

Past Event: Mark Bray: Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook, 10/26/17

In the wake of tragic events in Charlottesville, VA, and Donald Trump's two-day refusal to denounce the Nazis and white nationalists behind it all, the "antifa" opposition movement has become a hot topic of discussion.
But what is it, precisely?
And where did it come from?
In ANTIFA: The Anti-Fascist Handbook, organizer, historian, and Dartmouth College lecturer Mark Bray provides a compelling, meticulous history that details the early days of the movement --when it was formed almost simultaneously with fascism itself, to fight Hitler and Mussolini — up to the present day.
The book also acts as a handbook to tactics and strategies, key organizations and the core philosophies of the movement, suggesting what role citizens can play today
in combating the rise of the far right.
By drawing on his own 15 years of experience working within the movement, and as a historian and lecturer, as well as interviews with dozens of international and American antifa organizers, Bray presents a smart and gripping investigation that is also a one-of-a-kind look inside antifa today — thus offering insight into the growing but little understood resistance fighting against the alt-right.
About the Author: Mark Bray is a historian of human rights, terrorism, and political radicalism in Modern Europe who was one of the organizers of Occupy Wall Street. He is the author of Translating Anarchy: The Anarchism of Occupy Wall Street, and the co-editor of Anarchist Education and the Modern School: A Francisco Ferrer Reader. His work has appeared in Foreign Policy, Critical Quarterly, ROAR Magazine, and numerous edited volumes. He is currently a lecturer at Dartmouth College.

Past Event: Sarah Perry: After the Eclipse @ Mon Vert Cafe 10/19/17

Debut author Sarah Perry is coming to Woodstock to discuss her memoir After the Eclipse: A Mother's Murder, a Daughter's Search, with local author Julia Cooke. Doors open at 6:30 and seating is limited. Join us for a drink and a discussion - and books!
About the Book:
Sarah Perry was just 12 years old when she woke up to the horrifying sounds of her mother being murdered in the kitchen of their home. It took twelve more years for the police to find and prosecute the killer, after which Sarah embarked on her own journey to understand her mother and reclaim their story. In her debut memoir, AFTER THE ECLIPSE, Perry pens a deeply loving and impactful account of her beautiful, young mother’s life beyond her violent final hour, and she digs into the disturbing social biases that are at the root of the epidemic of gender-based violence.
In order to write this memoir, Sarah conducted dozens of interviews, poured over more than a decade’s worth of police files, and reviewed the frenzied news coverage that took place at the time of her mother’s death, and during the killer’s trial. Perry’s personal investigation proves fruitful in this searing story, which traces the complicated family history from which she emerges resilient, despite years of battling feelings of abandonment and loss. AFTER THE ECLIPSE is a beautiful memoir about the colossal love shared between mother and daughter, and it is a journalistic, literary feat in the realm of true-crime storytelling.
About the Author:
Sarah Perry holds an MFA in nonfiction from Columbia University, where she served as publisher of Columbia: A Journal of Literature and Art and was a member of the journal’s nonfiction editorial board. She is the recipient of a writers’ fellowship from the Edward F. Albee Foundation and a Javits Fellowship from the U.S. Department of Education, and has attended residencies at Norton Island in Maine and PLAYA in Oregon. Perry’s prose has appeared in Blood & Thunder magazine and Bluestockings Literary Journal. She lives in Brooklyn.

Past Event: Peter Gould: Horse Drawn Yogurt, 10/11/17

The Yankee Bookshop is proud to welcome Vermont author Peter Gould for an evening of stories from the back-to-the-land movement with special guest State Senator Alison Clarkson!
Like any good citizen of Vermont, Peter Gould is many things: a writer, a teacher, a performer, and an activist. He is the author of four books, both fiction and nonfiction - the newest of which is Horse-Drawn Yogurt: Stories from Total Loss Farm.
From the author’s website: Horse-Drawn Yogurt: Stories from Total Loss Farm is a collection of true stories of a young man’s life on a Vermont farm commune at the height of the back-to-the-land movement. This book is not only a journey into the inner workings of a Vermont farm in Brattleboro, but also to a time of instability: Vietnam. The book traces the steps taken by a then-younger Gould, who worked to balance the peace of communal farm life with the struggles that were tearing apart American politics and morale: war.
More about the author:
Peter Gould moved to Vermont as a member of the back to the land generation in the 1970's, a journey he mythologized in his first novel, BURNT TOAST, published by Alfred A Knopf. As a communard for ten years, he used and fixed old farm equipment and was one of the founders of the Brattleboro Farmers Market in 1974. Peter's second book was A PEASANT OF EL SALVADOR, a two-person play that he toured with performing partner Stephen Stearns throughout the 1980's.
While receiving his PhD from Brandeis University from 1998 through 2002, he wrote a book about the Chilean singer-songwriter, Víctor Jara, taught Spanish at Marlboro College, and founded a youth Shakespeare program, "Get Thee to the Funnery," which just celebrated its 20th summer season. The Funnery has grown and evolved; it now includes a free theater program in a low-income housing complex in Barre, and two other camps in southern and central Vermont.
Gould's Young Adult novel, WRITE NAKED, published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux, won the 2009 Green Earth Book Award, a prize given to the book that most inspires environmental consciousness and stewardship in its readers.
Gould's unusual novel, MARLY, was published in November 2015 by Green Writers Press. It challenges the reader to invent part of the story, and to confront some of the contradictions in the development of alternate and sustainable energy sources. His newest book, HORSE-DRAWN YOGURT, also by Green Writers, is non-fiction, a patchwork book of true stories about his farm days and how they echo in the life and agriculture of Vermont in 2017.
Peter Gould lives with his wife, Vermont State Representative and visual artist Mollie Burke, in Brattleboro. They have three children and three grand-children, and are active throughout the state in issues of climate change, transportation, food and farming, and arts-in-education: especially for children with economic and family challenges. In 2016, Peter received the Vermont Arts Council Award for Arts Educator of the Year.
